Bathroom Bed
I always like to keep things happy and light here at The Glam Pad, but there is a new design trend that has me so disturbed, I just have to get it off my chest… it is the open concept master bathroom/bedroom. I popped by a neighbor's open house the other day when I encountered this shocking phenomenon. The home was contemporary (as most homes in Miami are) but this was really taking it to the extreme. Maybe their renovation budget ran out before they had a chance to install the doors, I thought? So I called a local realtor friend of mine who without missing a beat said oh yes, this is the latest thing! My jaw dropped. First of all, this is revolting. There are some things that simply must remain private. It is also highly impractical unless you are living in your master suite alone. If your significant other comes in to take a shower after you go to sleep, you are going to hear and see every single thing going on next to you… lights and all. I just cannot even begin to comprehend this insanity. Here are a few examples of what I'm talking about…
Through my research, I learned this bizarre concept has actually been around for a few years now. Laurel Bern wrote about it (with equal disdain) in 2016. I suppose we have gotten to the point in our social-media-driven world where it is not enough to share our entire lives with the universe online… now we must literally share every aspect of our private business by living in a fish bowl! And its not just bathrooms… The rest of the home has also gone on display.
This spring, Joni at Cote de Texas wrote about the contemporary black steel front doors and windows that are sweeping through Houston. And it's also happening in Dallas… Christina at The Potted Boxwood recently posted on Instagram about the "industrial" look that is taking over and spreading to Nashville and Atlanta too.

How can all of these giant open windows and doors possibly be safe? Here in Miami, it is all about the Big White Box that possesses the same amount of warmth and charm as a prison. With no curtains and no privacy…

To each his own, but here at The Glam Pad, we will remain committed to classic, timeless, traditional architecture and interiors. Homes should not be disposable… cheaply built to be torn down each decade following the flock of the latest trend. It makes me want to move to the English countryside where homes have been around for hundreds of years! Demolition and construction now account for 25% of the solid waste that ends up in U.S. landfills each year (source) not to mention energy costs. It really is out of control, and I wish it would stop.
On a more positive note… Father's Day is Saturday, and in case you missed it you can see my Gift Guide here… all items are available with Amazon Prime to ensure on-time delivery. I also featured 15 classic wood paneled studies that are sure to stand the test of time. The library below was designed by Peter van Hattum and his partner Harold Simmons for the 1988 Kips Bay Show House, proving traditional design never goes out of style! Please click here for more.
